Total Acceptance
The title of this blog post could be a bit misleading, because, if truth be told, I believe in limited total acceptance. And I’m not trying to confuse anybody here, either. In theory, total acceptance is a wonderful idea- a part of the Buddhist tradition that I can fully embrace.
The idea that one should accept the reality that one faces is brilliant; I have a slight problem with this concept when it comes to oppressive or abusive situations.
If it is true that one creates one’s reality for the purpose of learning (a concept that has taken me some time to embrace), then it stands to reason that one can un-create the parts of one’s reality that one doesn’t appreciate.
That’s where I have an issue with total acceptance- because if we create our own reality, we should accept it…BUT( AND IT’S A BIG BUT HAHA) it is incumbent upon us to change those parts of our reality that don’t suit us, or cause us pain.
So, to modify what I said above I believe in total acceptance of reality with the proviso.. that if that reality is harsh or offensive, we always reserve the right to change it.
I would love to hear about your view on accepting reality, and any responses you made to an oppressive or abusive reality.
