FINDING THE SPACE
We are so usually so consumed by and focused on the many daily requirements that are necessary for us to survive, and dare I say, thrive. But too often we identify totally with the very specific situation that is in front of us: this is good for the simple accomplishment of a task, but optimal experience and results for many tasks today require appreciation of subtleties, and those subtleties involve energy. And the best way to connect to those subtleties is to create space.
What do I mean by creating/finding the space?
It is akin to a sense of detachment, a Buddhist concept that suggests that when you are less attached to the results of whatever you are doing (business or personal), you will have a better outcome, and enjoy the process too. Pretty lofty goals for a theory! As it turns out, it is a very valid theory and worth experimenting with. So how do you create/find that space?
1. Put your goal in perspective. It is extremely unlikely that what you are doing will cure cancer, or end world hunger. So give yourself (and everyone else) a break.
2. Breathe. It is so easy to get excited about a goal that you have committed to. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in us not breathing deeply or long enough.
3. Lose the ego. It’s nice to get all kinds of accolades, and it certainly feels good for the moment. But once you start feeding the ego there is no limit: so be aware that the ego can derail whatever benefit you would otherwise get. You can even bring out the ego consciously for a little massaging, but however you slice it: you control the ego, not the other way around.
4. Practice gratitude at every juncture. We live in a world where many people lack basic needs, let alone have their dreams fulfilled, or even have that chance in life. Be grateful that you are in a position to struggle (or not) for your goals. Never lose sight of this, and whatever happens will be sweet, indeed.
5. Be generous with your time and money. Generosity with others re-enforces the notion that we don’t live in a vacuum: everything we say and do has impact. Constant generosity creates great energy coming your way, and helps in creating the space you want.
Experiment and see how these concepts resonate.
