Integrity
It’s a New Year and a good time to reflect on what’s passed, and plan somewhat for the next year. Of course, you never know what treats and surprises are in store, but it’s somewhat comforting to think you can provide some guidepost for the things you want to happen. In this process, thinking about integrity can help. Admittedly, the concept of integrity is not as popular now as it once was. Does anyone even strive for integrity anymore? Not sure about the answer to that, but I still think it’s a valuable character trait, and who knows-it may just come back into favor.
When I think of integrity, I think of a certain type of action: one that is infused with a fair amount of consistency, and action that mirrors someone’s stated intentions as well as their values. Also, my idea of integrity includes a balance and control in one’s actions- someone who doesn’t cave or become hyper-emotional at the first sign of difficulty. Throw in some real compassion too, because in this challenging world, integrity must include more than a passing interest in other people’s lives. Considering how many people I come into contact with, I don’t know many people who satisfy these criteria, but I have recently met some promising candidates.
As I am writing this blog post, I can’t help thinking of my grandfather who, when he was alive, used to frequently remind me how much he and his family, acted with dignity- his version of integrity: I have rarely met anyone more abusive than he was. I
mention this only to remind everyone, including myself, that integrity, like every other character trait, is a product of perspective.
