The Healing Process
I am in awe of the healing process. The ability of the mind and body to heal from trauma and injury is nothing short of spectacular. As some of you may be aware, I had a bicycle “accident” about two weeks ago in which I sustained some injuries to my elbow. The prognosis is very good, and I am now officially in the healing process.
And what a process it is. My body is putting unusual demands upon me, and I am doing my best to meet them. The first big change I notice is my diet. I usually eat a very healthy balance and blend of carbs, proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables-along with fresh squeezed vegetable juice and wheatgrass three to four times per week. Since the incident about two weeks ago, my body is craving lots of protein, specifically red meat with its source of iron. I have to laugh as I devour prime ribs or a steak sandwich for lunch, since this is not my ordinary choice. And after lunch I usually crave a sugar filled dessert, such as chocolate layer cake or Toblerone bar. Luckily, New York is filled with new bakeries that feature cupcakes (not my thing) and freshly made chocolate cakes that are actually delicious. And I yes I have been indulging in these sweets- acknowledging my body’s cravings.
I’m sure my change in appetite is somehow linked to the exercises I am doing to return my elbow to full working order. It’s three times a day, four or five exercises each time. No wonder my appetite is through the roof! In addition to those exercises, I add in breathing exercises and several yoga poses that I have learned from kundalini yoga over the last two years. It is amazing how the kundalini rapid breathing, along with the kundalini yoga poses and meditation, is helping me. In some ways I have never felt healthier in my life, and I am so grateful for this. I have also consulted a book I previously read called “Mediations as Medicine,” by Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa and Cameron Stauth. This is an amazing book that illustrates the incredible healing power of kundalini yoga, alone, or when combined with western medicine. I urge everyone to read this book because it contains not just incredible medical advice, but meditations and yoga poses designed to cure specific ailments.
Sat Nam everybody!
